Desastre started as a personal art project — I hand-draw illustrations, digitize the drawings, and then get them machine embroidered onto upcycled vintage garments. No two pieces come out exactly the same, since every base garment is a different original item.

The name Desastre in Spanish means disaster and reflects my philosophy of embracing the chaos that exists naturally in life. That is a recurring theme in my artwork, which often depicts surrealist and absurd subject matter, as well as loud, pop art sensibilities.

However, there is a second hidden meaning in the brand name. Split into two words, 'De sastre' means tailor made, and is a tribute to another core pillar of the brand philosophy: that of uncompromising quality and attention to detail. Although when dealing with upcycled garments, some level of wabi sabi and imperfection is unavoidable, the overall quality and care put into every piece is essential.

A final brand pillar is sustainability. Fashion is the second biggest contributor to climate change, and in order to grow this brand with a clear conscience, it must be done sustainably. Each of my pieces is either made from upcycled vintage or cut and sewn from scratch using deadstock (second life) and sustainable, natural materials instead of new fabrics.
